Urban Art Retreat Dinner

Here's an invitation to the Urban Art Retreat Annual Dinner.
This will be the last opportunity to see the Raising Our Voices show.

URBAN ART RETREAT Annual Dinner for Newcomers!

January 31, 5-7 p.m.
at Lou Malnati’s Restaurant 3859 W. Ogden at corner of Cermak Rd.

First timers receive a gift! So if you have never been to the annual URBAN ART RETREAT Dinner, plan on attending this year. Wasn’t that you who wanted to step out of your comfort zone and meet some new people? We are all about non-violence and being inclusive! And we like art & healing!

There will be a brief presentation about URBAN ART RETREAT and some materials to read to learn more. For instance, did you know UAR offers free art classes for adults on Saturdays from 11-2? And you don’t need any art experience to enjoy the art sessions? Did you know that UAR offers space for you to give or take a workshop? Did you know we are looking for writers?

Each person will have a chance to introduce themselves on January 31 and briefly tell what they are doing right now or what cause they think is important. Maybe some people are looking for work and the rest of us can keep them in mind. Perhaps someone is starting a new job and would like to share their excitement. There might be a person present looking for help to distribute food to the needy next month? Perhaps some one’s play is opening and we will be invited to take a look? Maybe someone teaches free art classes and will invite everyone to try it out? Maybe someone is beginning college!

We will eat pizza and pasta and quench our thirst. After the dinner at Lou Malnati’s Restaurant, everyone will be invited over to nearby URBAN ART RETREAT for dessert and a last look at the current show on closing day.

Dinner is usually around $6-$7-$8 per person.
We really hope you decide to try something new and join the rest of us who will be there too!

LA Conference Drawing Results

Congratulations to the following 2009 WCA members whose names were drawn for the 2009 Women's Caucus Conference in Los Angeles!

Dayle Barrett
Corinne Didisheim
Virginia Dragschutz
Leslie Hume
Roxanne Phillips
Marie Samuel
Perla Segovia-Diaz
Jessi Weber

The 8 members will join the President, Lisa Becker and the Vice President, Marsha Heck. Below is an excerpt of the letter that was sent out to all 2008 WCA-STL members about the donation which made attending the conference possible for members.

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the WCA-STL is able to offer substantial financial assistance to a select number of 2009 members to attend the National WCA Conference in Los Angeles on Feb 27-March 2, 2009. It is the intent of this donor to send up to 8 members, in addition to the President and Vice President/Chapter Representative, to the National Conference.

The WCA-STL will cover room, transportation, the Lifetime Achievement Awards dinner, and any costs directly associated with the conference, not to exceed $1,000 per person. Any amount over that will be the participant’s responsibility. Participants will need to cover food outside the conference and any personal incidentals.

This gift will allow the St. Louis Chapter to have a great presence at the National Conference. The National WCA, as well as our local chapter, is looking forward to a very positive transformation in the next years. St. Louis can be at the forefront of this journey! As the donor stated, “Janice Nesser has given us a national voice. Let us give her support in LA. You will grow as artists and members of the Women’s Caucus for Art. Hopefully, my gift can make this happen in Los Angeles in 2009.”

Raising Our Voices - Chicago reception photos

Here are some photographs of Raising Our Voices from the Chicago reception. Elisabeth Blair, vocalist and songwriter, performed for the reception. (Thank you Elisabeth!)
I didn't get great pictures of the reception attendance since my camera batteries died, but about ten people (including Dail Chambers and her family) braved the winter wonderland to come. (Chicago got 8 inches of snow while we were there.)
