The Sketchbook Project

Jennifer Weigel decided to participate in The Sketchbook Project through Art House in Atlanta, Georgia awhile back, but has since determined that she would rather extend an invitation to the WCA-STL membership to participate by allowing members to each do a page in the book. The book first appeared at the annual holiday brunch and several members created pages in it. The cover has even been altered with the addition of quilting squares that Dayle Barrett provided. Other materials offered included crayon, pen, and charcoal, although most artists chose to use pen and/or crayon.

The book is not due back until February, so members can continue to participate by sending the book to one another so that others can work in it. The last person to have it will then send it to Art House for the traveling exhibition, which will be coming to Soulard Art Market here in St. Louis on March 11. If the book sells, the money will go to WCA-STL for upcoming exhibitions and events.

WCA Brunch

I missed the opportunity to post something about the annual members' brunch before it happened, but better late than never. The WCA-STL brunch occurred at noon yesterday, Sunday, Dec. 14, at past president Janice Nesser's house in Florissant. It was very well-attended and everyone enjoyed Janice's gracious hospitality, good food, and good company. The annual gift exchange was a hit, as always, and several members brought some beautiful artworks to exchange with one another, including jewelry, ceramics, fibers, book arts and more. Members could also participate in The Sketchbook Project by doing a page in one of the sketchbooks - materials provided included pen, charcoal and crayon.

Meeting Minutes - November

Women’s Caucus for Art – St. Louis Chapter
General Meeting – Tuesday, November 25, 2008
Olivette Community Center, Olivette, MO

Jan Nesser, President, called the meeting to order at 7:10 following a wine and snack reception. Jan introduced herself, noting that she is now serving as National WCA President-Elect. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Twelve officers and members introduced themselves.

Jan thanked the outgoing officers for their years of service. Cards will be sent to members with details about the December 14 holiday brunch at Jan’s home.

National WCA: National meetings will be held in Chicago in 2010 and in New York in 2011. Jan spoke of the need to bring young women into the organization and that a key link is faculty in educational institutions. National is rewriting WCA’s vision statement. More details will be sent as Jan will be asking member to respond to the tentative statement.

Update on Local Office Facilities: STL-WCA has an office, a central location for record storage and acquisition, computer access, and phone access – STL-WCA, Art Department, SLCC-Florissant Valley, 3400 Pershall Road, St. Louis, MO 63135. (314) 513-3349

Fundraising: Roxie Phillips said that using Goodsearch.com when searching web sites will earn money for STL-WCA – one cent for each search. While it may not seem like a large amount, pennies will add up over time if all WCA members utilize Goodsearch. Accessing shopping sites utilizing Goodsearch will also earn money for STL-WCA as a percentage of the purchase price may be given to STL-WCA. A flyer with information about Goodsearch and the Schnuck’s eScript card was available.

Membership: Leslie Hume encouraged members to renew by December 15 as the national dues will increase after January 1. Information concerning the increase in Institutional Memberships by the national organization was discussed. Leslie distributed ballots, asking members to indicate whether or not an increase in Institutional Membership from the past fee ($75.00 -- $50 National/$25 Local) to a new fee ($150 -- $75 National/$75 Local) could be authorized. Members approved the increase in Institutional Membership dues.

Treasurer’s Report: Evie Shucart’s report noted: Checking acct balance $2046.10, Savings acct balance $1366.75, Total available $3412.85. The Tsai fund CD balance (not available for general expenses) $2143.26. Income: Sept/Oct/Nov $1418.39. Expenses: $1090.13. Donations made by the members toward expenses: $467.00

Evie reviewed the proposed budget for 2009 which had been approved by the Board in July, 2008, for presentation to the membership. She noted that the income required to cover expenses includes hoped-for charitable gifts, and members and board members giving monies beyond the amounts raised by dues and grants. Roxie Phillips moved the budget be approved. Virginia Dragschutz seconded the motion. Motion carried (voice vote).

Exhibitions: Jennifer Weigel said that Erica Popp’s art work is being shown at Spirits in Alton, IL. Raising Our Voices is at Fort Gondo, 3151 Cherokee, and will close Saturday, November 29. Jennifer will take the work to Chicago where it will be exhibited at the Liz Long Gallery.

Jan Nesser invited members to consider showing work at Spirits. New directional lightening and a new hanging system have been installed at Spirits. While there is no official opening reception at Spirits, STL-WCA members have had a “Night Out” to celebrate the hanging of each show. The Alton Telegraph will cover a future exhibition. Some time slots for exhibition remain. Contact Jan Nesser for information.

Women and Environment: The exhibition, in conjunction with the Philadelphia chapter and the WCA collaborative quilt project “Women Helping Women Stitch by Stitch,” will be held during Women’s History month and will be at SLCC-Florissant Valley. An entry fee of $10.00 will go to the Rubia Project. If sales result, 25% of the sales price will be retained by STL-WCA to go to a local women’s organization. The opening reception will be Thursday, March 5, 6:00 – 8:00 PM. There will be a lunch-time panel discussion hosted by WCA featuring women discussing how their work relates to feminism and the relevance of the term to the participant. Brenda Oelbaum, Midwest Region WCA Vice-President, will be the juror. Following the exhibition at SLCC-Florissant Valley, work by local WCA members will travel to the Riverside Gallery in Webster Groves along with other work from local members.

Made by Hand: WCA will host a juried exhibition in conjunction with Innovations in Textiles 8, a biennial fiber celebration in the greater St. Louis area, during Sept/Oct, 2009. The venue will be a new studio and exhibition area (Crossroads) that has been offered by Lisa Becker. The exhibition will be included on the bus tour. A member’s fiber show will be held at Spirits on a first come, first exhibited basis. Work for Spirits should be at least 16” framed as the exhibition walls are large.

Jan mentioned that the hope is to offer a juried component and a member component to all shows as a way of including members in the experience of exhibiting.

Contemporary Women Artists XV: Yolanda Lopez, 2008 recipient of a WCA Lifetime Achievement Award, has agreed to serve as juror but will need to be contacted to coordinate dates for jurying and exhibition. Exhibition scheduling at The Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, MO, is in progress. It may be possible to work with Sheldon Art Gallery and Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, Director of the Sheldon, in some manner.

Newsletter: Jan thanked Jeane Vogel for editing the newsletter as Jan noted that the deadline for items for the newsletter is November 25.

Webpage: Michelle Thomas has done a masterful job of recreating and updating the webpage. Check it out – www.wca-stl.com

Blog: Jennifer Weigel is managing a blog for SLT-WCA. Send information to her for inclusion on the blog.
