CALL for ART: ART: Agent for Change
WOMEN'S CAUCUS for ART- ST. LOUIS CHAPTER CALL FOR ART Theme: Art: Agent for Change. This salon style exhibit explores change as it relates to art, whether personal and technical, social/political, or economical. Venue: Gya, located at 2700 Locust, St. Louis 63103 is a Gallery and fine craft gift shop operated by Yeyo Arts Collective. The Collective is dedicated to women's art and topics surrounding women’s issues; including family youth, and community. Yeyo Arts guiding principals are: -Empowerment through arts based learning. -Practicing intergenerational collaboration. -Encourage creativity and inventive efforts in daily life practice. -Support of independent, arts based entrepreneurial efforts. -Standing together as women, and against gender stereotyping in the arts and society at large. Eligibility and Specifications: Open to all current paid WCA-STL members. Work must be executed within the last two years. Open to all 2D and 3D media. Work must be wired and ready to hang, no sawtooth hangers please. Due to space, artist may submit up to 3 pieces, no larger than 24X36. Fee and Procedure: A maximum of three entries per artist may be submitted. Entry fee is $10. Please e-mail JPEGS (standard format) to exhibits@wca-stl.org no later than Thursday March 17th. JPEGS should be no 72dpi and no smaller than 4 inches wide and no larger than 7 in. wide Complete and mail entry form and all fees according to calendar below. Entries must be postmarked by Tuesday March 15th. Dates: Tues. March 15th Postmark Deadline Thurs. March 17th JPEGS due April 5-6 drop off at Gya 2-6pm Sat. Membership: The Women's Caucus for Art was founded in 1972 in connection with the College Art Association (CAA). It is a national member organization unique in its multi-disciplinary, multicultural membership of artists, art historians, students, educators, and museum professionals. As a member, you enjoy national and local benefits including exhibitions, networking, girls night out, art meetings and workshops, newsletters, national exhibitions and yearly conferences. MEMBERSHIP FORM: _Professional /General membership $60 membership requires 4 hours of volunteer time per year. $40 to national/$20 to local _ Supporting membership $110 $40 to national/$70 to local _ Institutional/Business membership$150 $75 to national/$75 to local _ Lifetime membership $775 includes $500 for national/$275 to local _ Subsidized membership student or limited income $30 We offer student/hardship memberships at the reduced fee of $30 dollars. $25 will go to national and the other $5 to the local chapter. In return those receiving scholarship for their dues will be expected to volunteer 10 hours to the Caucus over the next12 months. WCA-STL Art & Social Justice conference
WCA-STL is planning an Art and Social Justice Conference and several exhibitions for July. We are looking for members who would like to participate in the planning of the conference. Art and Social Justice is a very large topic to tackle in a day conference. If you have strong opinions on possible panels/presentations topics, event planning, or art activism we are asking you to consider sharing your thoughts and experience.

Theme: Mirror Image exams the concept of the photograph being a mirror of its creator reflecting back their experiences, ideals, beliefs and invoking discourse. Any photographic medium is eligible: silver prints, alternative process, digital,..Other media may be incorporated but the key element must be a photographic medium.
About the Exhibition: This exhibition is part of the 2011 Women’s History month celebration ‘History is Our Strength’ on campus of STLCC-Florissant Valley College.
Eligibility: Open to all women artists. Selection is based on work created within the last two years. Work created under instruction is not eligible. Artwork may be submitted framed or in an alternative presentation form and ready to hang. Work without the appropriate hanging apparatus will be disqualified. Installation work must have specific instructions and include the appropriate installation/hanging materials. Work must fit through a standard door.
Rules of entry: Participants may submit up to 3 pieces of work. Images should be saved as jpeg images and should have a resolution of 300 dpi and sized at 4“ x 6”. Assign a file name to each digital image, starting with your name followed by the title. Entry Fee: There is no application fee. Artists are responsible for shipping their work to the gallery. All work must arrive at the gallery by Friday Feb 18, Noon.
Sales: A 20% commission on all sold work will be retained and donated to the St. Louis Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art. Work remains the property of the artist until sold. Sold artwork must remain in the exhibition until the last day of the show.
About the Curator: Janice Nesser is a mixed media artist who is active in the arts community. She currently serves as the President of the national Women's Caucus for Art and on the Board of the local chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art. She has exhibited nationally and internationally for the last 20 years. Her work is included in many permanent collections; and has been featured and reviewed in various publications, most recently in River Styx magazine, West End Word and the Riverfront Times. She is a Professor of Art at STLCC-Florissant Valley where she serves as the Photography Program Coordinator and the Director of the Florissant Valley Art Galleries.

EXHIBITION RESULTS
Thank to everyone who entered work for the 4 national WCA exhibition opportunities. Below are results from 3 of the 4. We are waiting on results for the Video Festival and will post them when we receive them.
Hidden Cities
Artists were invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City, real or imagined, in an array of media, with the theme broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context. We asked them to convince the viewer of its viability, a live space filled with passion and imagination! “No matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City, a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions. These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side.”
From over 894 pieces by 363 artists, the juror, Lisa Phillips, Director of the New Museum, NYC, had the daunting task to choose the 48 pieces of work by 43 artists in the exhibition and catalog. I would like to thank Lisa for her time and vision. I also want to thank the members of the national exhibition committee who worked so diligently to pull off this exhibition. A special thank you to National Exhibition Chair Karen Gutfreund for her leadership, creativity, drive ..and for the many hours she put in to make this exhibition a success.

Hidden Cities will be on view February 1 - February 12, at New Century Artists Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Suite 406 (between 10th and 11th Avenues) in the heart of Chelsea. Reception with the artists: Friday Feb. 11, 6-9pm. The reception is included on the Friday bus tour.
Sanctuaries in Time
The idea of creating personal sanctuaries in time is based on noted philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel's concept that "Judaism is a religion of time" and that we must move "beyond the confines of measured time" to set aside time and space for creating and building a life of values and spirituality in our lives.
The challenge to the artist to consider the balance of the mystery and continuum of time and her place in the present brought over 100 artists with near 300 images for consideration. 40 artists and 54 works were selected for the exhibition.
