The WCA's mission is to create community through art, education, and social activism. We recognize the important role that the arts play in all our lives and acknowledge the power of the arts to affect positive change. In this spirit, the conference is intended to be a venue in which to explore the role of the arts in promoting social justice and quality in our communities and around the globe.

The conference is open to artist, activists, art historians, curators, community organizers, educators, arts administrators, students, and anyone interested in how art can change the world for the better.

I was a personal friend of Fr. Lorenzo Rosebaugh, OMI, one of a generation of liberal Catholic priests working for social justice for women and children. He was murdered in Guatemala almost two years ago just before he was due to return home to St. Louis to retire. (there's a Post Dispatch article link on my site) He was buried in south America.
In my grief, I have created two projects in his memory. One, in the"Faces" project, I paint portraits of children murdered by guns, for their grieving families. Then I exhibit art created from image transfers of the faces onto vintage handkerchiefs. Info and examples of the art are on my web site, www.ilewski.com
In my second project, I have tried to create a young adolescent illustrated biography of Fr. Lorenzo based on his own bio..."To Wisdom Through Failure". My mother, Gail Eisenhart, a published author and poet, adapted the text from his text. I did the illustrations. We are currently searching for a publisher. Melissa Jarnagin, senior editor at Concordia Publishing has reviewed the manuscript with this to say, "Wow! That's a powerful story! The illustrations are very emotive while still appealing to children with their colorful spirit. His story parallels the freedom riders of the civil rights movement."We hope to have the book printed bilingually to be able to send it back to the children of Guatemala where he has become a folk hero among the poor.

PRESENTERS BIOS

Angela Evans is the Outreach and Policy Coordinator for the Coalition on Human Needs, alliance of national organizations working together to promote public policies that address the needs of low-income and other vulnerable people. Angie’s background includes organizing and leadership development with the Center for Community Change, Jewish Funds for Justice and state and local campaigns. She spent her youth organizing and attending punk rock shows. She holds a Master Degree in Social Work, concentrated in Social and Economic Development from Washington University in St Louis.

Con Christeson is an artist/educator living and working in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to teaching at Webster University and Ranken Technical College, she is actively engaged in building a practice as a community artist. She is co-founder and managing artist of the community collaborARTive, an arts-based integrated component of the Allen Avenue Transitional Housing Program of Peter and Paul Community Services. The collaborative engages men [who are/have been homeless] and program staff along with community artists, partners, and students to create visual, written, and public art. Priti Gulati Cox is a native of India. She has been living in Salina, Kansas since 2000. In 2008 she began work on a project entitled Vanishing India that addresses the effects of corporate globalization on the social, political and economic fabric of India. In 2010, she also started a sister project entitled Stree Jaati (community of women), documenting the effects of India’s newly acquired free market policies on the women of her country. She goes back to India at the end of every year to continue doing research on these two on-going projects.

In March 2008, she created a guerrilla installation, Unfinished Portrait, to draw attention to loss of life in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The project will be continued in 2013, encompassing both Iraq and America’s longest war, Afghanistan. Beyond Salina, she has exhibited at the 2010 Women and Water Rights Exhibits in Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota, Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, the 2010 United States Social Forum in Detroit, and, the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas. Her next solo exhibition will be in September 2011 at the Percolator Gallery and other locations in Lawrence, Kansas. For more information visit www.vanishingindia.com

Leslie Holt, Executive Director, VSA Missouri. Holt is a visual artist and educator with extensive experience in social work and advocacy for people with disabilities, including mental illness and developmental disabilities. She has worked at several St. Louis organizations including Life Skills Foundation, Places for People, NAMI St. Louis, and St. Louis Community College. Most recently she coordinated a program at Washington University School of Medicine, Pediatricians in Community, which gave pediatric residents community experiences with children living in poverty and with disabilities. She has ten years experience teaching studio art and art history on the college level at schools including Fontbonne University, St. Louis Community College at Meramec, and Lewis and Clark Community College. She exhibits her paintings nationally and is represented by galleries in St. Louis, Memphis and Washington, DC. Leslie has a BFA in Painting from Washington University in St. Louis, an MFA in Painting from Washington State University and is a 2008 graduate of the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute. Leslie has been involved with VSA Missouri since it started getting off the ground in 2008 – first as a contracted artist, then as its founding board president, and now as executive director.

Lee Lee attained her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and has spent time in over 40 countries. These experiences have led her to develop a wide range of painting styles in response to the diverse conditions of our world. Her work is informed by several movements through art history including the feminine expressionist drawings of Kathe Kolwitz to the actions of the 1970s which embraced processes using a shotgun or fire. Rich textures developed through destructive means speak to socio political situations imposed on people as well as environmental degradation. Sensitive mark making atop of these textures explores the emotional textures within a community, emphasizing resilience in the face of adversity. Recently, strong environmental themes have entered into her repertoire as she recognizes that social and political stress is driven by the scarcity of our resources.

Resilience as a theme was manifested through the opportunity to curate an exhibition in regards to Genocide for the Mizel Museum which grew into an installation for the 7th Biennial International Conference of Genocide Scholars in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Other international exhibitions have included an installation of prints at the Instituto Allende in Mexico and paintings exploring the imprint of tradition in contemporary Vientnamese culture at the Metropolitan Center in Saigon, Vietnam.

Recent environmental exhibitions have included REAP: The Environmental Unsustainability of the American Food Machine at C Emerson Fine Art in St Petersberg, FL, Extinction at the Denver Botanic Gardens, and Vanishing Pollinators as part of the Bioneers Conference on Sustainability in San Raphael, CA. Resilience in the face of environmental degradation was explored through an series of work, Guatemala: Mayan Women, created for the 2010 Biennial of the Americas in Denver.

Currently, Lee Lee is using plastic as a material to explore the impacts of plastic on the environment as well as the chemical imprints left in our bodies. The UN Environment Programme recently wrote a feature article on her work about ocean plastic, entitled, The Plastic Flow: From Waste to Waves. Complimenting this theme is work being created which follows the development of a permaculture installation around her Taos, NM studio. The small scale production of food will be presented in contrast to industrial agricultural practice, which like plastic, is exacting a tremendous toll on the environment. www.Lee-Lee.com

Naomi Natale is the founding artist behind One Million Bones. Both an installation artist and photographer, Naomi was the founder and director of The Cradle Project, a large scale installation calling attention and raising funds for the 48 million children orphaned in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 550 cradles were created and donated by artists from around the world. Naomi has served as an artist-in-residence at Columbia College of Chicago in 2008, 2010 and 2011. She speaks internationally on the topic of art and activism as well as her installation works and is currently both a TED Senior and Carl Wilkens Fellow, respectively.

*One Million Bones is a collaborative social arts practice designed to recognize the millions of victims and survivors who have been killed or displaced by ongoing genocides and mass atrocities in Sudan , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burma. In Spring of 2013 1,000,000 handmade bones made by artists, activists and students will flood the National Mall in Washington, D.C. creating a visual demand for solutions to this issue. Seeking Youth Panelist for 64^th UN DPI/NGO Conference “Sustainable Societies; Responsive Citizens”

WCA has submitted a proposal for a workshop at the upcoming UN DPI/NGO Conference in Bonn, Germany and are seeking a youth representative to participate in the panel. This workshop will be moderated by a representative of a Danish arts organization called KIK and the panel will include delegates from WCA and a New York organization called Ribbon International.

We are seeking an individual, under age 25, who has worked at the WCA chapter, region or national level on an art project, conference or exhibition dealing with the environment. Please email a short description of the work you were are involved in. Also include date(s) of the event, what chapter(s) was involved, and what was accomplished. Please provide your contact information: name, phone number and email. Also provide contact information for one reference.

Description of Workshop:

PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND VOLUNTEERISM THRU THE ARTS AND CULTURE

Our workshop will cover community-related art and culture projects promoting volunteerism and concerns for the environment thru the arts and culture. People will become aware of what the term “Sustainable Development” means through thought and action using the arts. Examples will demonstrate how volunteers come together to organize activities, events and exhibits for these projects. The audience will be asked to think and then act on their thoughts in an artistic way about caring for the environment after considering what is at stake or threatened in their environments.

Date of Conference: September 3-5, 2011

Location: Bonn, Germany

Eligibility and Information:

WCA member under age 25
Must attend the conference and participate in the panel
Pay her own way to/at the conference. WCA does not reimburse for expenses associated with the conference. Expenses include airfare, accommodations, in-country transportation and food. There is no cost for the conference itself.

In Memory of Paul Reiter

I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Paul Reiter today from a mutual friend. Paul was an amazing person, and perhaps the most noble and humble individual I have ever met. He always gave of himself without question to everything he did and was a strong supporter of & advocate for the arts. He extensively collected works by local artists and attended numerous exhibitions, always bringing a smile & keeping an open mind and encouraging others to do the same.

I first met Paul through the Life Blood Exhibit preview party, where he purchased one of the auctioned artworks to benefit the show. He continued to support the Life Blood Exhibit after that, following both that show and my own personal endeavors, like the Art Is Everywhere sign project, of which he was one of the first to register for a sign and kept that sign in the back window of his van where it could be seen by people all over town. He was always very giving & generous and his continuous presence & support strengthened the art community

Please read this article in the St. Louis American to learn more of Paul's unending support and passion for art, along with his loyalty to his family, the St. Louis American, and the St. Louis community as a whole. He will be sorely missed.

Theme: Themis was the Greek goddess of divine law - the primal, unwritten laws governing human conduct, order, and social control. For this exhibition, we are not concentrating on the figure Themis but what she stands for. We are looking for artist perspective of laws, human conduct, and social control.

About: This exhibit is in conjunction with the Women’s Caucus for Art summer conference: Art and Social Justice. The conference takes place July 22, 2011 in St. Louis.

Juror: Christina Cosio serves as Assistant Director of the Exhibitions Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her BFA from Washington University, St. Louis and her MA from University of Missouri, St. Louis. Prior to moving to Chicago, Cosio worked in a variety of art institutions throughout the St. Louis area, including Laumeier Sculpture Park, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center. She has held positions in education, curatorial, and collections departments.

Venue: Bouileau Hall is on the campus of Saint Louis University. 35 N. Vandeventer Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108 Gallery hours: Friday and Saturday 10am – 4pm or by appointment

Liability / Insurance: Artists are responsible for insuring their work while in transit, and, if deemed necessary by the artist, while on exhibit. SLU-Bouileau Hall will not insure the work.. Neither the WCA or SLU is responsible for damaged work.

WCA reserves the right to not exhibit any artwork that does not met the specifications of the prospectus including but not limited to, arriving after deadline, damaged in shipping, defective frames, lack of hanging hardware, etc. Saint Louis University and Boileau Hall provides security during regular gallery hours.

Eligibility and Specifications: Open to all Women artists. Work must have been executed within the last two years. Open to all 2D and 3D media. Unfortunately, we are unable to show video work in this exhibition.

The Women's Caucus for Art (WCA), Midwest Region, is hosting a one-day Art and Social Justice Conference in St. Louis, MO, on Friday, July 22 at the Regional Arts Commission in the Delmar Loop. The conference is in conjunction with the WCA National Summer Board Meeting.

Open to all current paid WCA-STL members.
Work must be executed within the last two years.
Open to all 2D and 3D media.
Work must be wired and ready to hang, no sawtooth hangers please.
Due to space, artist may submit up to 3 pieces, no larger than 24X36.

Fee and Procedure:
A maximum of three entries per artist may be submitted. Entry fee is $10. Please e-mail JPEGS (standard format) to exhibits@wca-stl.org no later than Thursday March 17th. JPEGS should be no 72dpi and no smaller than 4 inches wide and no larger than 7 in. wide Complete and mail entry form and all fees according to calendar below.
Entries must be postmarked by Tuesday March 15th.

Membership: The Women's Caucus for Art was founded in 1972 in connection with the College Art Association (CAA). It is a national member organization unique in its multi-disciplinary, multicultural membership of artists, art historians, students, educators, and museum professionals.
As a member, you enjoy national and local benefits including exhibitions, networking, girls night out, art meetings and workshops, newsletters, national exhibitions and yearly conferences.

Anyone applying for the scholarship should send a paragraph along with their membership form stating why they should be eligible for the scholarship/hardship funds. Theme: Mirror Image exams the concept of the photograph being a mirror of its creator reflecting back their experiences, ideals, beliefs and invoking discourse. Any photographic medium is eligible: silver prints, alternative process, digital,..Other media may be incorporated but the key element must be a photographic medium.

About the Exhibition: This exhibition is part of the 2011 Women’s History month celebration ‘History is Our Strength’ on campus of STLCC-Florissant Valley College.

Eligibility: Open to all women artists. Selection is based on work created within the last two years. Work created under instruction is not eligible. Artwork may be submitted framed or in an alternative presentation form and ready to hang. Work without the appropriate hanging apparatus will be disqualified. Installation work must have specific instructions and include the appropriate installation/hanging materials. Work must fit through a standard door.

Rules of entry: Participants may submit up to 3 pieces of work. Images should be saved as jpeg images and should have a resolution of 300 dpi and sized at 4“ x 6”. Assign a file name to each digital image, starting with your name followed by the title. Entry Fee: There is no application fee. Artists are responsible for shipping their work to the gallery. All work must arrive at the gallery by Friday Feb 18, Noon.

Sales: A 20% commission on all sold work will be retained and donated to the St. Louis Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art. Work remains the property of the artist until sold. Sold artwork must remain in the exhibition until the last day of the show.

About the Curator: Janice Nesser is a mixed media artist who is active in the arts community. She currently serves as the President of the national Women's Caucus for Art and on the Board of the local chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art. She has exhibited nationally and internationally for the last 20 years. Her work is included in many permanent collections; and has been featured and reviewed in various publications, most recently in River Styx magazine, West End Word and the Riverfront Times. She is a Professor of Art at STLCC-Florissant Valley where she serves as the Photography Program Coordinator and the Director of the Florissant Valley Art Galleries.

EXHIBITION RESULTS

Thank to everyone who entered work for the 4 national WCA exhibition opportunities. Below are results from 3 of the 4. We are waiting on results for the Video Festival and will post them when we receive them.

Hidden Cities

Artists were invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City, real or imagined, in an array of media, with the theme broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context. We asked them to convince the viewer of its viability, a live space filled with passion and imagination! “No matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City, a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions. These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side.”

From over 894 pieces by 363 artists, the juror, Lisa Phillips, Director of the New Museum, NYC, had the daunting task to choose the 48 pieces of work by 43 artists in the exhibition and catalog. I would like to thank Lisa for her time and vision. I also want to thank the members of the national exhibition committee who worked so diligently to pull off this exhibition. A special thank you to National Exhibition Chair Karen Gutfreund for her leadership, creativity, drive ..and for the many hours she put in to make this exhibition a success.

Sanctuaries in Time

The idea of creating personal sanctuaries in time is based on noted philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel's concept that "Judaism is a religion of time" and that we must move "beyond the confines of measured time" to set aside time and space for creating and building a life of values and spirituality in our lives.

The challenge to the artist to consider the balance of the mystery and continuum of time and her place in the present brought over 100 artists with near 300 images for consideration. 40 artists and 54 works were selected for the exhibition.

The Jewish Women Artists’ Network (JWAN) produced of a full color catalogue with essays to document the 2011 National Juried Exhibition.

The exhibit, Sanctuaries in Time, is on view at the Kraft Center for Jewish Life at Columbia/Barnard University in New York City, Jan. 18 - March 1. Reception with the Artists: Thursday, February 10, 5:30-7pm.

The Exhibition Juror, Dr. Maya B. Katz, assistant professor of Art History at Touro College is an author who has published numerous articles and a major book by Cambridge University Press. Her focus is the intersection of religion, activism and visual art. She wrote an essay for the catalogue as well. The JWAN exhibit is open to all WCA members.

The Women's Caucus for Art 2011 Conference LIVE SPACE is next Month!

The concept of LIVE SPACE is twofold: first, it describes art that is happening in the moment, and second, art that is energetic, stimulating and electric. LIVE SPACE will be happening not only all over NEW YORK CITY, but also in cities across the COUNTRY through blogging, YouTube, Twitter, and live feeds. From live feeds for the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the LIVE SPACE gala, to performance art on YouTube, to live art happenings in front of the Hilton, this WCA Conference will be in the moment, exciting and electric.

Thursday will be a jam-packed day of panels, performances, networking, and exhibitions, including the reception for JWAN'S Sanctuaries in Time exhibit and the Young WCA performance of What Young Women Want.

Friday will feature the WCA International Video Shorts Festival, followed by a bus tour to the Sackler Center for Feminist Art, A.I.R. Gallery, a WCA New York members' exhibition, and the reception for Hidden Cities, the national exhibition juried by Lisa Phillips of the New Museum.

Saturday begins with the Chapters' Council Meeting, followed by a full day of TFAP panels, and culminates with the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Hilton and the LIVE SPACE GALA at the American Folk Art Museum.

Sunday includes the bus tour to Rutgers University to visit the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions, the Institute for Women and Art, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum.

Monday is the national WCA board meeting at Barnard College.

10-11:50 am – The Curate's Stand: A Curator's Tea Party — A Feminist Tea Party collective will host a panel discussion. Curated by Yulia Tikhonova, a Moscow-born, New York-based curator. Panelists: K8 Hardy, a New York-based filmmaker, photographer and fashionista, founder of the queer feminist art collective LTTR, creator of the cult zine FashionFashion and, Paddy Johnson a writer who has been published in artreview.com, Art in America, FlashArt, Print Magazine, TimeOut NY, The Reeler, The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, artkrush, Art & Australia, Flavorpill, NYFA Current, The New York Press, and Fanzine. Beacons of artistic concerns, these panelists will share the observations of a wide spectrum of references which women use. Defined on one side by Sarah Palin's conservative preaching, on another side - by the sexually unbounded empowerment of Lady Gaga, what are the models that contemporary artists use and how they navigate through the "rampant multiplicities of identity." The panelist will present their assessment of challenges that women-artists face to sustain critical feminist productivity in the context when the challenging aspects of queer representation in popular culture has been erased. The panel will be held within the settings of traditional tea party parlor (complete with table linens, porcelain tea service and sweets) which will be large enough to accommodate the audience and the guest curators. Like at any meal or celebration this homogeneous environment will help to create an open comfortable dialogue where the audience doesn't feel like an audience, but where everyone is equal. Sincerity and a sense of humor are required for attendance.

Description: For features women's intimate stories of want, using live performance and video projection in a multi-media exploration of women's desires as expressed via male voices. "Requesting Access" is collaborative photo shoot performance by Chanel Matsunami Govreau (played by Asian Barbie), photographer Martin Solheim and makeup/hair artist Tamara Qabazard. This performance layers the exaggeration of cultural costuming over questionably (un)real storytelling. This is combined with the friction and vanity of flash photography to explore multiracial identity and gender in interracial relationships as it combines with expectations of sexuality and its possible profit.

“Trading Flowers for Love Stories”

Description: Free wild flower (photo) for you’re of love story. I have gathered images of wild, uncultivated plants. I would like to trade a photograph for a hand written love story. Simply show up write down your story and then you can pick any picture. You can keep it anonymous or you can include names, dates, times, locations. The stories will be gathered and compiled to form an archive, a historical record, and a book. You will receive the link to the print on demand book if you would like a copy.

On view at the Zimmerli Art Museum is the major exhibition Dancing with the Dark: Joan Snyder Prints 1963-2010, the first prints retrospective by this acclaimed expressionist painter and a MacArthur 'genius' award recipient (2007).

Also visit the Zimmerli's world-renowned collections of Russian and Soviet Non-Conformist Art, nineteenth-century French Art, American Art, prints, and photography.

Tour will also include a visit to the Institute for Women and Art exhibition Joan Snyder/Intimate Works, a Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Exhibition at the Douglass Library. The Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions (BCIE) will offer a behind-the-scenes presentation by master printers and master papermakers on their collaborations with Joan Snyder and other leading artists; there will also be a private viewing of new BCIE projects, as well as a glimpse of the current Mason Gross School of the Arts MFA exhibition. The afternoon will culminate with a special lecture by Joan Snyder, followed by a reception honoring the artist. WCA conference NEW YORK FEBRUARY 10-14

The Women’s Caucus for Art 2011 Conference LIVE SPACE is well underway.

The concept of LIVE SPACE is two-fold: first it describes art that is happening in the moment, and second, art that is energetic, stimulating and electric. LIVE SPACE will be happening not only all over NEW YORK city but also in cities across the U.S. through the use of social networking, blogging, YouTube, twitter and live feeds.

WCA plans on incorporating LIVE SPACE not only into it exhibition, panels and bus tours but also into in every aspect of the conference. From live feeds for the Lifetime Achievement Awards and LIVE SPACE gala, to performance art on YouTube, to live art happenings in front of the Hilton, the WCA conference will be in the moment, exciting and electric. It will be an event not to be missed.

The WCA conference home base will be Hilton New York, 1335 Avenues of Americas. Register early because space is limited. Please use the code ‘Women’s Caucus for Art’ when making your reservations. Rate is $202 single bed /$222 double beds

11th Annual Photography Exhibit

Submissions must be received by Sunday, June 27, 2010

The Village of Elsah Museum announces the 2010 Annual Photography Exhibit will be held from July 18 to October 16, 2010. The exhibit is entitled “Natural Elsah” and will be held in the Museum building, known as the Village Hall, at 26 LaSalle Street, Elsah, Illinois. This is the eleventh annual exhibit. The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate and foster an appreciation of the beauty and unique qualities of Elsah and the immediate area in every season. Photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to make submissions to the exhibit and participate in the purchase prize portion of the exhibit. As in previous years, the photographers may sell their displayed photographs to the public retaining all proceeds. An opening reception will be held from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Village of Elsah Museum on Sunday, July 18, 2010.

Rules and Photographer Recognition:

Location:
In order to recognize places of interest in the entire Elsah corporate limits, photographs must be taken in the valley area or on one of the bluffs, either on the Principia College campus, Eliestoun or other familiar locations close to these geographic areas.

Prizes:
The first place prize is a purchase prize. The Museum will purchase the first place matted photograph for $150. The purchase will include a signed permission to use the photograph in publicity for the 2010 and 2011 exhibits as well as printed material generated as a result of the current or next year’s exhibit. There will be certificates to recognize additional works.

Judging:
The winners will be chosen by our judge, Janice Nesser-Chu, who is a working photographer/artist and a photography professor.

Works submitted for the purchase prize will be judged on the following criteria:

O Expression of the theme, “Natural Elsah”

O Quality of the photographic composition and quality of the photographic reproduction.

All photographs submitted (silver gelatin, color, digitally or photographically produced) must be:

O at least, 8 X 10 print size and

O matted (mat not to exceed 16 X 20.)

O matted with a white mat

Photographs may be submitted for the exhibition only, not participating in the purchase prize activity. Please include the words, “Exhibition only” on the back of the mat or on the transmittal sheet.

Photographs will only be accepted that are “on theme” and taken in valley and bluffs of the Village of Elsah and the adjoining area as defined under “Location."

Presentation requirements:
It is highly recommended, but not required, that the matted print be either framed or in a clear covering. All framed photographs must have a wire firmly attached to the back for hanging. Those framed without a wire or other open hanger will not be exhibited.

Matted prints may be displayed using double sided tape on the back side and/or small pins inserted in the corners or clips.

The Museum will only be responsible for damage to a photograph IF the photograph is framed, includes a hard plexi protection and has a wire attached to the frame with screws.

Each photographer may submit up to a total of two (2) photographs, whether for exhibition only or as part of the purchase prize activity. Information on the back of the mat or frame must include the name of the photographer, title, price (if for sale), mailing address and contact numbers. Also, please include a temporary, removable, title card without the photographer’s name to be affixed to the front for purposes of judging.

Judging will occur prior to the opening of the show on July 18. The winner will be notified in writing or email. It is not necessary to be present in the area to receive recognition.

Photographers are responsible picking up their unsold photographs after the exhibit closes. Those not picked up by October 31, 2010 will become the property of the Village of Elsah and may be sold with the Village retaining all proceeds. The Museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm during the period from the first weekend in May through the last weekend in October.

Rosener will show members how to use their own digital cameras effectively in taking pictures. Participants need to bring two pieces of artwork to photograph as well as their digital cameras.
Fee for Current WCA Members $30 (sign up for both workshops for $50)
Non-WCA members $50 (both workshops $90)

Session 2 Preparing Digital Files of Images

This one-night-only event will include a small sampling of works by several artists in the exhibition, a bathroom installation by Jennifer Weigel and a silent auction including artworks by local artists, a Luna Pads intro kit & two certificates towards The Keeper menstrual cup products.

Life Blood Exhibit is a group art show coordinated by Jennifer Weigel and themed around menstruation that will travel to various venues throughout the St. Louis metro region from 2010 – 2011 and then travel nationally from 2011 – 2012. Each showing will highlight different artists in the group. This traveling art show features thirteen St. Louis women artists exploring the theme of menstruation, from menarche to motherhood to menopause and more. Playback Workshop Theater in partnership with the Diversity Awareness Partnership, The YWCA of Metropolitan St. Louis presents, “Homegrown: St. Louis Organic Racism, a one-act play that tells the love story of a couple who move to Missouri together, one originally from St. Louis, the other a newcomer from another state. While addressing racial diversity issues is inherent and organic in our region, the storyline weaves an authentic patchwork of scenes which show how societal differences in the region became a true challenge to the relationship of the 2 people involved.

The play is followed by a playback theatre performance facilitated by Playback Workshop Theatre's Artistic Director and Founder Jacqueline Masei. Masei has over 20 years of experience as a teaching artist and director of playback theatre, theatre of the oppressed and social justice work. After the performances there will be a focused discussion facilitated and supported by professionals in the fields of social justice and diversity.

STATEMENT:My work reflects a deep involvement with my native New Mexico –not as much visually as spiritually.My childhood was a melting pot of surreal attitudes surrounded by such diversities as the Spanish Penitentes, early Catholic retablos, and American Indian artifacts. All were woven among family tales and myths. My ancestors were among the first Spanish settlers of Northern New Mexico.As I grew up, I felt the tragedy and the glory of the people and the landscape. A Different Kind of Opening Night

Last night several women (and a few men!) gathered for a WCA Night Out at Spirits in Alton. We chatted, ate delicious food and downed $3 cosmos. Christine, Evie, Pat, and I spent a couple hours on Tuesday afternoon taking down the “On the Wall” fiber show and putting up the new artwork: lovely landscape paintings by Evie Schuart and some beautiful fiber work by Pat Owoc.

Seeing the work hanging in the space yesterday made me realize how much talent we have in the WCA. Having the opportunity to sit down to dinner and chat with fellow members reminded me of how wonderful and inspiring it is to be in the presence of other artists.

Our WCA Nights Out at Spirits are different from usual gallery openings. I love the opportunity to enjoy each others' company and to network. I learned about a possible job opportunity, gained new perspective on what “art as activism” can mean, and enjoyed learning what the other women have been up to.

If you haven’t been attending the Nights Out, I encourage you to make the trek up to haunted Alton to hang out with us.

The exhibition 'From the Center now' will be juried by feminist author and art historian Lucy Lippard. The exhibition's theme is a play on words taking in account Lippard's groundbreaking volume of feminist art criticism "From the Center."
The exhibition's aim is to revisit the themes and concerns of Lippard’s book in order to illustrate both where women’s art has been as well as what it looks like in the first decade of the 21st Century. In the 70’s Lippard noted that some feminist artist had chosen a fundamentally sexual or erotic imagery a response to women being objectified in art historically. Others celebrated the female experience where birth, motherhood, rape, maintenance, household imagery, windows, menstruation, autobiography, family background and portraits of friends figured prominently. Some created more politically charged work with posterlike content. Others utilized materials and colors traditionally denigrated as “ feminine,” or in a more symbolic or abstract parallel to their experiences, images of veiling, confinement, enclosure, pressures, barriers, constrictions, as well as of growth, unwinding unfolding and sensuous surfaces were common. Still others dealt with organic life images and some started with the self as subject, moving from the inside outward. All of this work exchanges stylistic derivation for the other work that was happening at that time creating insight into a potential female culture.
Has this female culture been fully realized in 2010? What does our art look like now? How has it changed? How has it remained the same? Where do we go from here. " From the Center Now will show how women's art has shifted, progressed–or remained the same—since the seventies.
Special attention will be given to the work of women artists from the Midwest region, the host region - giving an added dimension to the term '“from the center.'”

Featured artist Christine Ilewski

Christine is a part of the Artist Outreach Program offered by Liquatex. She is a degreed working artist who visits universities and art leagues with about an hour-long academic lecture/demo on acrylics sponsored by Liquitex. She will cover everything from surfaces, the range in the paint itself, color theory, mediums and varnishing. In the end, each person attending receives a primary mixing set from Liquitex. Her desire is to put some new product information and samples into the hands of working artists and art faculty at no cost.

Please show your support for the WCA/STL and for new women artists by inviting them to attend our meetings. We hold program/information meetings every other month on the last Tuesday of the month.

Call For Art

The Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) International Video Shorts Festival is held annually in conjunction

with the College Art Association conference. The festival’s premier will take place during the week of

the WCA conference in Chicago, Il. This year’s show will be co-juried by Sheryl Mousley, curator of film

and video at the Walker Art Center, and Verena Mund, Festival Program Associate, also of the Walker

Art Center.

rules and requirements: Open to all women artists. The works must be created by women

videographers, or directed/co-directed by women. All genres will be accepted: experimental, narrative,

documentary, animation, collage, etc. Entries must not exceed 15 minutes in length, should be in DVD

format and cued to start. Please do not send original/master copy.

Submission deadline: October 15th, 2009

Felted Teka workshop with Nino Hecht: Sunday, October 4, 1-4pm

Juried by fiber artist Jo Stealey. Stealey is an art professor and head of the fiber department at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; and is in several permanent collections. Stealey explores aspects of drawing, writing, sculpting, and assembling, all through her expansive use of handmade paper. She states, “I am searching for a visceral response that touches a place within us where no words exist to describe our emotion.” Naturally occurring shapes and structures inspire Stealey's works.

WCA-STL sponsored workshop in conjunction with “Made By Hand” and IT8

Date: Sunday, October 4th, 1-4pm

Duration: 3 Hours

Tuition $45 for Current WCA members, $55 for non- members (Includes materials)

Make your own 8X12 decorative hand-felted piece of WALL ART using wet and needle felting techniques and YOUR IMAGINATION!!!! NO prior experience necessary!!!

Workshop will introduce you to an ancient craft of felt making. You will use various wool fibers/embellishments and observe interaction of organic fibers when water and agitation shape and transform them into a piece of art. To register, please call Crossroads Art Studios at 636-724-0288.

Artist: Born and raised in the Eastern European country of Georgia, Nino was fascinated with rich cultural heritage and abundance of folk craft techniques. An eco-friendly alternative to animal fur, hand-made felt has become an inspiration for her two and three dimensional art, wearable art and jewelry. Nino incorporates wet felting technique with subtle needle-felting touches to create unique textiles.

Contemporary Women Artist XV - Art as Activism' Exhibition weekend was great..from the lecture by juror Yolanda Lopez on her work to the gallery talk/exhibition opening.

On Saturday, artists in the exhibition gathered with Yolanda for an informal brunch where there was good food, great conversation and lots of laughing. Yolanda talked to them about their work and lead a discussion on art as activism.
